When you install a playhouse in the garden, the structure alone is not enough to captivate a child for more than a few days. What transforms a cabin into a real playground is the interior layout and the decorative details that give it an identity. Whether it’s a raw wood playhouse or a colorful plastic cabin, the possibilities for personalization are vast, provided you start from concrete constraints: the available space, the material of the structure, and the age of the children.

Treatment of raw wood before decorating the playhouse

Before thinking about colors or furniture, we start with the surface. A raw wood playhouse needs appropriate protection for the outdoors. Without treatment, the wood will gray in a few months and the boards will warp under moisture.

First, apply a wood stain or microporous paint specially designed for outdoor use. This step protects the cabin and serves as a base for all subsequent decoration. Painting directly on untreated wood reduces the lifespan of the coating, and you’ll find yourself sanding everything down the following year.

Water-based paints, which are less toxic, are well-suited for a children’s space. You can combine two shades on the facade (window frames in one color, cladding in another) to create a visual contrast without overwhelming it. At la Maisonnette De Barbichounette, you can find models that illustrate this type of two-tone personalization on wood.

For the roof, if the boards allow rain to pass through, attach bitumen felt or lightweight corrugated sheets before decorating. A leaky roof will discourage children after just a few showers, compromising all the interior decoration work.

Interior layout of a children’s cabin: furniture and storage

The interior of a playhouse rarely measures more than two square meters. Therefore, each element must be chosen for its compactness. We prioritize outdoor furniture sized for children: a small table, stackable stools, and a plastic storage bin that withstands moisture.

A reading corner works well in these small spaces. A low shelf fixed to the wall, two or three books, and a floor cushion are sufficient. Feedback varies on this point, but water-repellent fabric cushions hold up better than traditional indoor cushions, which mold at the first dew.

  • A waterproof toy bin with a lid, placed in a corner, to store play dishes or figurines without cluttering the passage
  • A small wall shelf (maximum two levels) screwed at child height, which serves both as storage and a display
  • A washable outdoor rug on the floor, which defines the play area and insulates from the cold or damp floor

We avoid heavy solid wood furniture: they take up too much space and are difficult to move for cleaning. Plastic or lightweight metal remain the most practical materials for cabin furniture.

Exterior decoration of the playhouse: facade and garden ambiance

The facade sets the tone. A few simple elements can transform a basic cabin into a unique place, without requiring a large budget or advanced DIY skills.

Durable facade accessories

A mailbox fixed near the door is a classic that always works. Children love to slip messages inside, creating a lasting play ritual. Choose one made of metal or treated wood to withstand the elements.

Hanging planters on the windows add color without additional paint. A few seasonal flowers or herbs allow children to get a taste of gardening. Securing the planters with screwed hooks (not glued) prevents them from falling at the first gust of wind.

Garlands and outdoor lighting for the cabin

A solar LED garland along the roof or around the door extends the use of the playhouse into the evening. Solar models eliminate any electrical wiring, which removes the risk associated with extension cords in a play area.

Secure the garland with plastic clips rather than pushpins, which rust and can injure fingers. In winter, remove it to store indoors: frost can damage the small solar cells over time.

Thematizing the children’s cabin: role play and DIY

This is where the playhouse truly comes to life. Instead of multiplying accessories, choose a single theme and stick to it. A coherent theme stimulates the imagination more than a mix of unrelated objects.

For a shop cabin, attach a small wooden counter to the window (a board on two brackets is sufficient), add a toy cash register and some plastic fruits. The counter at the window transforms the facade into a play scene, visible from the garden.

For an adventurer’s hideout, a treasure map drawn on kraft paper and glued to the interior wall, a wooden chest (or a painted reclaimed crate), and a flag made with a broom handle create the atmosphere in just a few hours of DIY work.

  • Shop theme: window counter, painted sign on a board, play dishes, and fake money
  • Adventurer theme: map, chest, cardboard telescope, personalized flag
  • Artist workshop theme: folding easel, pencil pots fixed to the wall, blackboard painted on the interior door

Cardboard remains an underestimated ally for DIY. You can create ephemeral accessories (shield, crown, signpost) that children can personalize themselves with paint or markers.

Safety and age limits for a furnished playhouse

If the playhouse has an elevated sleeping area or a slide, French regulations impose specific constraints. According to decree n°95-949 and European standard EN 747, any sleeping area with a mattress exceeding 60 cm from the ground is prohibited for children under six years old. This information must appear on the bed, the packaging, and the instructions.

For ground-level cabins, there are no regulatory age restrictions. You simply adapt the layout: no small detachable parts for children under three, no protruding hooks at face height, and solid wall fixings for anything that is hung.

One last often-overlooked point: ventilation. A closed playhouse in full sun can heat up quickly. Keep at least one window open or install a small shutter to allow air circulation, especially in summer.
